HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS
YoungAndWiser, Inc. provides unique, effective life education for youth on the topic of Healthy Relationships. This instruction is based on our developmental model, and it shows youth the importance of respect and honesty. We don't preach at them about these being just the "right" things to do; we show them how it's the "smart" thing to do because it makes their lives better.
MENTORING
The mentoring program is designed to provide youth with the opportunity to learn about their own development and the issues that can complicate or prevent a smooth and healthy transition to adulthood.
We tell the truth and give both sides. We don’t prescribe what they “should do” we tell them the pros and the cons. Since youth are typically capable of rational thought they can do a cost-benefit analysis if they truly understand what the costs and benefits are.
COLLEGE READINESS
In just a few decades universities have morphed from "in loco parentis" (college as a substitute parent) to sink or swim. This seemed to work adequately until we decided as a society that college was essential for every young person to thrive in a highly competitive, postmillennial socioeconomic environment. We have opened the floodgates; this is both a cause for celebration and a compelling reason to know the level of preparedness of each student as he or she enters the system.
SERVICE LEARNING
YoungAndWiser, Inc. provides services to the community based on our availability, and all service projects are developed by interns. Each semester we brainstorm about community needs and design a short-term project. This offers a unique opportunity for interns and volunteers to learn about project development and administration, fundraising, and the practical skills required for each project. This is often the most gratifying part of involvement in our organization, especially since it's student lead.
